The last few weeks have been a crazy time for all of us.
Even though few believed it possible, Donald J. Trump was elected President of the USA.
Even though he lost the popular vote.
Even though there were allegations of election rigging and hacking by a foreign nation.
And hasn't his first week in office been eventful?
Here is a video produced by the Australian journalist Waleed Aly summarising everything he's done so far:
Pretty chilling isn't it. When I first heard the words "America First", I couldn't help but think of Hitler and Nazi Germany. His attitude of "It's all about us and fuck the rest of the world" is deeply disturbing.
It is sad just how much of his policies come from a place of fear. Afraid of Mexican's taking US jobs, let's build a wall. Afraid of letting in Islamic terrorists, let ban muslims from entering the country.
Strangely enough, his ban does not apply to nationals of Saudi Arabia, the country from which the majority of the 9/11 hijackers hailed from (15 out of 19). Is that simply because he wants Saudi oil to keep flowing? I hope not, I hope thats just me being cynical and that there are actual, legitimate reasons, though somehow I doubt that. Just today I read that Trump say's his ban will "keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the US". Since 9/11, how many terrorist attacks have there been in the US by Islamic fundamentalists? I really want to know, please comment if you know. I can think if the Boston Marathon, and the soldier who killed his fellow soldiers, though I'm pretty sure that happened in Kuwait and not IN the US.
I have been watching these developments in the US recently with a sort of stunned disbelief mixed with abject horror. How could this possibly have happened? How can there actually be people in that country who believe in this hateful, scared little man? A man who has the mentality of a narcissistic, high school bully, forever engaging in pointless Twitter wars with all-comers because he simply can't NOT respond.
We were stunned this week to find out that American friends of ours, people that we invited to our wedding, people that we used to respect, are button wearing, flag waving Trumpkins. It's truly sickening.
It hasn't been all bad though. I have been blown away by the number and scale of people of all different groups who are rising up to protest this illegal President, not just in the US but across the PLANET! It's gratifying to see that not ALL American's are bad, which is a message I've been seeing more and more of in social media. That's a pretty stupid attitude. There are plenty of smart, good people in that nation too. And they're fighting back. It gives me hope that the Tyranny of Trump may actually have a positive outcome in the end, by uniting people against this kind of evil and hatred.
That is assuming we all survive the next 4 years!
When he starts America's next war, and we all know that it's coming, it will not just be American men and women who fight, there are plenty of other Allied countries who will send their soldiers to die at Trump's behest.
I started this post with a quote by Edmund Burke. I think his words have never been more true than right now. This is not a time when we can just sit back and watch events unfold. These days are historic. These days require ALL of us to rise up do something.
I don't do well with moderation, or shades of grey. I'm a black and white, yes or no, right or wrong kind of guy. The way I see it, the world is split into 2 sides right now. The right, and wrong. The courageous, and the cowardly. Whatever Trump does during his reign of terror does NOT only affect America, it will affect us all.
Everyone needs to decide which side they're on.
So make your choice.
Because it matters.
